FabFeast

This project was a collaboration with PD(X)Lab a Portland based collaboration of designers, makers, and technologists.

ADX / Art Design Portland and the Special Snowflake Supperclub co-sponsored a Fabrication Feast inviting all makers to celebrate collective dining and making. PD(X)Lab was asked to participate in the feast as a collaborator, charged to design and fabricate something for the dinner.

Using the concept of collaborative design and making, we designed and fabricated a lamp that was a self generating feedback loop. Using bespoke hardware we realized the volume of conversation at the dinner table into a dimming light source, coupled with a projected 3d visualization. The software was generated using the Firefly plug-in for Grasshopper along with some custom scripting. As a collective, the diners controlled their own light levels based on their conversation, as well as 'built' a visualization.

Our goal was to use this same volume data to fabricate a table in situ. Further research and development was needed, however, the idea was to generate g-code on the fly, to CNC mill a topological surface in real-time.
